I think about how many people say they are going to start something new to improve their lives and then something happens and they fall off the boat almost before they even get going. I teach fitness classes and people will start my class and within a couple of weeks or sometimes even BEFORE they start they tell me they have an injury and can't take my class. Oftentimes, the injury is a freakish one that happens outside of my class.
I actually feel terrible when that happens and can relate. What I think people don't get is that when we want to make changes in our lives, we have to realize that moving past one's current way of being must be addressed and overcome before moving forward is possible.
I think if people knew that this was the case, it would not throw them for a loop so much when the disarray breaks lose. It took me a while to realize why this happened to me. So what I would do is tell myself that the chaos that happens with the decision to change is simply part of the process of releasing the habits and behaviors that have you at your present state of existence.
If someone gets an injury, then they need to nurse the injury back to health but instead of getting physically active, they can then start addressing their eating. If someone's eating explodes out of control after making a decision to eat healthy, then instead of making big sweeping changes, take baby steps. So for week #1 only focus on drinking the right amount of water for their weight or eat 2 more vegetables than usual. Only do one thing for week #1. Then week #2 you add a new positive lifestyle change so that you can more easily handle the resistances that come up.
The key is to have the courage to weather the initial storm and a high enough belief in the changes you wish to make that you will be persistent even in the face of apparent failure.
The chaos of change is a good thing, it means that you are hitting the nail on the head about what you need to do. Just be strong enough in your spirit to keep fighting and then one day, you will win. If you make it about the journey and not only the destination, all that happens is actually interesting and you will learn so much about yourself and life on the way.
